| Jack Conners stood in front of his mirror, tying his tie and staring at himself. Today was the day of days: the day he and Amelia were going to face a Judiciary Panel pertaining to their relationship. Secretly, he knew this day would always come, there had been no way to avoid it. At some point, someone was going to mess up or going to tell a person who wouldn't keep such a secret. During its hay-day, Jack had always hoped it would just fix itself: the rule would go away or something would happen that would excuse them from the department's rule concerning relationships.
Just too nice a thought, wasn't it Jack? How could you be so naive? Its just like with Celeste...you just refused to believe it was possible. Now look at you: same bad situation, different girl.
Sighing to himself as he pulled the tie tight, Jack listened to the sounds of the shower. Amelia had been there for a bit, but the hot water she was using up wasn't on his mind. Ever since the bank robbery, Amelia had been having horrible nightmares that made her thrash at night. Sometimes she would wake up, doused in sweat and panting, fear painted all over her face. Jack never could get much out of her about it, and he had suggested that she go see Kalinda if things were bothering her, but time and time again she just shook him off.
The worst one actually happened the one time they were beginning to get intimate, and Amelia freaked out, slugging Jack in the process. She hadn't said anything after the face except apologies but Jack knew it started the moment he touched her in anyway sexually. From that point on, they barely cuddled, even in bed. It was awful...but Jack had no idea what to do. Thankfully, it never seemed to come around when Amanda was in the immediate region, so his little girl never had to see Amelia in such rough shape. The only thing that did linger, however, was the sleeplessness.
I just wish I could do something to help.
Satisfied that he had played with his tie enough, Jack heard the shower turn off with its trademark squeak noise. Stepping out of the room and letting the door swing closed softly he went to the kitchen and threw some bread in the toaster to accompany the coffee he just put on.
Leaning against the counter as he watched the stairs, Jack sighed to himself again. Today was going to make or break a lot of things...he just hoped it didn't include them. |

| Remy stood under the spray of water. Her body shaking as she let go of more tears. It seemed to be all she did anymore. In the morning, get up from a night of fitful sleep and cry to herself in the shower so she didn't worry Jack any more than she normally did. She knew she needed help. She did. And badly. She hated what it was doing to them. She couldn't even.. be 'with' him because the man's words would conjure up in her mind and play over and over again the things he was going to do. The things he whispered in her ear.
It wasn't Jack's fault. It wasn't her fault. But, it was killing them and Amelia loved Jack too much to let it go on. She had to do something about it. But, she didn't want to see Kali. Kalinda was too friendly with her, and she dated her best friend. Even though she knew full well Kali wouldn't tell Wes anything.. she just.. couldn't do that. Kali was too close... it had to be someone on the outside.
Amelia shut off the shower, and heard Jack immediatly head downstairs. She knew that that was her fault. He felt uncomfortable with her now.. because of that night.. when she decked him in the middle of a cycle.
Stepping out of the shower she dried herself off. Checked her face to make sure the tears and the eyes weren't showing her crying. She changed and dried her hair. Leaving it in it's normal down waves. Today was the day they were going to face the trial, the one that would decide if they got to keep their jobs. Got suspended.. got .. anything. She knew she was willing to sacrifice her job for him. That much was a given.
Amelia put on a plum colored silk blouse and tucked it into a grey pencil skirt. Putting on the bracelet that he had gotten her for Christmas she ran her fingers over the charms of the bracelet she wore everyday and every night. Only taking it off to shower or work out. She put on her favorite earrings and grabbed her purse heading downstairs to the kitchen where he had coffee and toast ready.
Putting her purse down, she stepped into the kitchen watching him for a moment. Sometimes, she was so worried... that he would tell her it wasn't worth this.. wasn't worth any of this. That she wasn't.. worth the trouble, the nightmares, to get out. He couldn't have this sort of thing around his daughter. It wasn't working. It was a constant fear that plagued her every morning and sometimes.. during the night.
Amelia cleared her throat.
I.. I've decided... to.. go see someone. About the .. dreams and I.. made an appointment upstairs on my phone so.. I just.. I just wanted to let you know .. I.. I won't be seeing Kali. She.. she's too close and I can't talk.. about this.. this stuff.. not like that.. with her.. and with her and Wes being.. and I know she's professional but she's... almost a friend and I.. I can't say things to her like.. like this.
She nodded. So that she wouldn't keep babbling and went to the coffee maker and began to pour herself a mug of the coffee that he had brewed. Adding the Coffeemate stuff from the fridge into it making it caramel flavored and put the top on the travel mug. She wasn't hungry, so toast wasn't going to do it for her, but she leaned against the counter waiting for his words to come. |

| Looking up from the paper on the island, he saw Amelia slowly descend the stairs, the puffiness of her eyes the only thing off-putting about her entire ensemble. Jack knew she used the shower to let her emotion out, even if he pretended not to...she thought she was protecting him, but her red eyes that looked so sad always gave it away. She didn't immediately go for coffee or food, giving Jack time to turn over the paper.
Their hearing had made the front page, and there was a lot of publicity about the "Captain with an Insubordinate Appetite." Just the thought of finding the editor who came up with that headline made him want to tear throats out. Granted, there were also a half dozen opinion articles both in support and opposition to their relationship. His favorite was from a person who claimed to be part of the MHD, who stepped up and defended the both of them, even offering up his badge if either one of them lost their job. He wasn't sure if Sergeant Moore was serious, but Jack would remember him...his reports and the opinion had stunningly similar writing styles.
I.. I've decided... to.. go see someone. About the .. dreams and I.. made an appointment upstairs on my phone so.. I just.. I just wanted to let you know .. I.. I won't be seeing Kali. She.. she's too close and I can't talk.. about this.. this stuff.. not like that.. with her.. and with her and Wes being.. and I know she's professional but she's... almost a friend and I.. I can't say things to her like.. like this.
She nodded as he nodded at her comments. Quietly heading over to the coffee maker, she poured herself a travel mug and made it to her tastes. Jack didn't interrupt her, but he honestly had no real idea how to react. He wanted to hold her, tell her that he still loved her, and that everything would be alright. Truth was, he had no idea how she would react to any of it. Looking expectantly at him, Amelia looked almost...fearful...of what he would say.
Amelia, sweetheart, I don't care who you see. I only recommended Kali because she's the Division's on-call person for that. I...I never meant to pressure you. I'm just glad that you're looking to get help, since gods know I can't help you...
He trailed off, forlorn. He hated not being able to help, in any situation, but Amelia was special, different, more important. Taking a sip of coffee from his own mug, he stared down in to the dark liquid as it settled from being jostled around.
So...are you ready for today? |

| Amelia's mouth opened, as he said that he couldn't help her. Tears burned behind her eye lids. It didn't take her amazing senses to know that she was hurting him every time that she couldn't allow him to help her. Mostly because she was lost in the world of that day. That single day when everything could have changed for the worse. It hadn't, but, that didn't mean that it couldn't have. But it wasn't the possibility of death that frightened her to the point of having nightmares. It was instead, the thought of the things the man had whispered in her ear.
Things he had never done, or would ever have the chance to do. Amelia wished she was strong enough to let it slide. To push it away. The man was dead, it didn't matter. But, she couldn't. For that she would need help.
Jack changed the subject, but, she was determined to say it.
It. It's not your fault you can't help me and I'm .. terribly sorry that.. I've been such a burden to you. I don't know how to even put what I feel into words. It's overwhelming sometimes, and other times easy to forget. It comes up at the worst moments and I.... I"m terrified I'm going to lose you because of it.
Amelia looked down at her mug. Her fingers playing with the little rhinestone colar on the rim of the light pink colored cup. A gift from Amanda for Valentines day. Amelia took a deep breath and then she let it out with a long sigh.
I'm not afraid of today. Because, I've all ready decided, what I will do if they try to take your job. I won't let them. You did nothing wrong that day, and they wouldn't even be questioning it .. if it weren't that we are in a relationship. I have done a lot of research, and I think I'm going to win this for us.
She went over to her purse and she picked it up. Inside, was a thick folder, crammed with all sorts of paper. Though she didn't open it it was obviously something she was proud of. She had used a lot of her detective skills to fill this sucker and she went and met with a lawyer friend of Wes' that had helped her with how to present it all. Her eyes shifted back up to Jack.
I'm sorry. Her eyes fell to the folder in her hands. I haven't made anything easy. Your having to fight for your job because you like a woman that has moved into your house and.. now she can't even.. do.. do anything because of some jacked up crap in her mind and I can't imagine that there is much left that would make it all worth while. Amelia took a shakey breath and her lower lip trembled. As much as it had all been bothering Jack it was coming to the surface how much it had been bothering Amelia too. |

| Jack could see it in Amelia's eyes that his change of the subject wasn't going to last. Whenever Amelia was determined about something, her mouth would twist just slightly. Her mouth twisted and, despite her nature considering the day, Jack knew exactly what was coming.
It. It's not your fault you can't help me and I'm .. terribly sorry that.. I've been such a burden to you. I don't know how to even put what I feel into words. All Jack could manage was a frown at the woman whom he loved so much. They had been through so much, and she was worried about losing him? That just wasn't Jack...he didn't leave when things became difficult. This was a time where their relationship would prove itself. She looked down in to the mug Amanda had made her for Valentine's Day before sighing and continuing.
I'm not afraid of today. Because, I've all ready decided, what I will do if they try to take your job. I won't let them. Stepping up to her, Jack softly touched the side of her face, making her meet his eyes. It had been forever since he had actually felt her skin. You are not losing me. You haven't been a burden on me or Amanda. I would love it if you won this debacle for us, but we do this together.
She retrieved her purse, showing off a thick file. Conners had to raise an eyebrow to that, mainly as he had no idea where or when Amelia had pulled together such an expansive dossier. I haven't made anything easy. Your having to fight for your job because you like a woman that has moved into your house and.. now she can't even.. do.. do anything because of some jacked up crap in her mind and I can't imagine that there is much left that would make it all worth while.
A woman I love. I am way beyond liking you sweetheart. There is plenty of us to make this all worthwhile. There is all of the future, watching Amanda grow up, maybe even siblings.... The look of shock and a flare of happiness in her eyes made Jack smile. Hope in her eyes was all he needed from her.
Nothing about today is gonna hurt the rest of our lives together.
I only wish I believed that so wholeheartedly. |

| He touched her face. Causing her teal eyes to look up at him gently. She was terrified. Terrified that she might seem too much like his exwife.. and that he might think it wasn't worth sticking around to see if they could make it through this problem like he had tried with his ex. She bit her lower lip as he promised her that she was not a burden to him or Amanda. Tears shimmered in her eyes and she nodded. They really did have to go into this together, but she was going to do everything she could to make sure that he kept his job. He had worked too hard to create the MHD to have them take it away from himm.
He told her that he loved her. Causing her to smile, and nod, because she loved him too. She loved him a lot which was why she wanted to fight very hard to keep what they had going all ready. He told her that they had a lot to look forward no matter the outcome. Amanda growing up. Giving her siblings. Which caused her to widen her eyes and smile. A bit of a blush coming over her cheeks.
She wanted children, of course.
He knew that, they had talked about it before. She knew that he was on board but to hear him talk about it like it could happen sooner rather than later made her smile. They weren't even engaged, much less married, which was a requirement for children before she had children of her own. She knew that he wouldn't mind that, but their relationship was an adult one. They knew they loved each other, and she figured that it was only a matter of time before they were engaged just because of how fast they seemed to be moving.
"All right. Well... lets go do this."
She held her hand out for him and he took it. She let him pick up his toast and coffee. She still had her untouched coffee in the mug Amanda had made for her for Valentines. They headed out of the house and got into his car together. She put her bag and file down on the floor board and took a sip of coffee. She loved this cup it was the most special thing to her along with the bracelet she had gotten for Christmas.
"Nice sweater, by the way." she smiled over at him seeing him having worn one of the ones she had bought for him. The mysterious disapperance of his old sweater was still a constant joke that sent Amanda into a fit of giggles. Neither girl would ever give up where that went.
But the cup was something Amelia would never let go of. She took as good a care of it as she could. Because, it was the way Amanda had said she loved her. On the front of the mug was painted in dark pink over light pink. An I, a heart, and a you.
"You know.. I was thinking.. Amanda's spring break from school is coming up soon and I thought.. regardless of the decision today we should take a family vacation. Maybe.. the beach... or.. go to a place with amusement parks or whatever.. anyway, I thought it would be a fun family thing." she shrugged slightly her hand reaching over to take the one he didn't need for driving. Today she just felt like she needed the extra comfort. |

| She nearly trembled under his touch, her face only partially hiding the fear that she was holding back. Jack couldn't understand why Amelia would be frightened of him. It didn't make any sense to him...then again, what woman did make sense to a man? Letting it go as she blushed and smiled as he spoke to her, Jack felt a bit more relieved about Amelia's frame of mind.
All right. Well... lets go do this.
Jack smiled as best as he could, considering, taking her hand as they walked towards the door. Trying to get the door while balancing coffee, toast in his mouth, keys, and Amelia's hand was quite the feat. Somehow managing the juggle, Jack locked the house and carefully sat in the car. Getting situated with all his items, he sighed in relief for a moment before Amelia reached out to hold his hand again. Taking it eagerly, they shared a smile for a moment of peaceful serenity before the reality of the day would hit them again.
She made a comment about the sweater vest he was wearing under his jacket, smiling about the little joke her and Amanda shared. Whatever it was, it resounded around sweaters, and Jack simply let them go, it wasn't worth his effort.
They pulled out of the driveway, and held hands the entire way. You know.. I was thinking.. Amanda's spring break from school is coming up soon and I thought.. regardless of the decision today we should take a family vacation. Maybe.. the beach... or.. go to a place with amusement parks or whatever.. anyway, I thought it would be a fun family thing.
Smiling as he turned in to the Bastion Police Headquarters' garage, he spoke to her as they pulled in to a parking spot. Let's wait and see until we figure out what's going on. I don't want to take a trip to a money pit like the beach or an amusement park if neither one of us have jobs. I'm not saying that that is going to be the outcome of the hearing and such, just....I'd like to be prepared for the worst.
Before heading out, Jack leaned over the console and pulled Amelia in to him. Kissing her on the lips again felt so foreign, yet so right. It felt like it had been ages since they shared one, and he smiled.
I love you. You ready?
They stepped out of the car and walked together, hand in hand, towards the swarming cloud of journalists. |

| He was right. Waiting until the decision was made was probably for the best. She had just wanted.. to have something good to talk about for once. She looked down at their joined hands and nodded. She wasn't going to bring it up again until they knew for sure. Even if something happened, she would find a way to make sure that Amanda's spring break was fun. Even if they did crazy home things. Like making tents and things in the house and host their own 'circus'. Amanda was probably just the right age for something like that to be fun.
He leaned across, and she leaned into him.. and they kissed. Her hand reached up and cupped his cheek gently. Letting them kiss softly. It had been so long, that the kiss began to elicit feelings in her that she hadn't felt since that night. Maybe it was because.. she was finally going to get help. She kissed him passionatly, holding him in place just a moment longer to get her point across before they parted.
I love you too. Lets do it.
She got out of the car with him and immediatly she was blinded by the flashes. She hadn't expected so many cameras at once, and immediatly she was blind. Retinal burn, on someone like Amelia made her nearly incapable of moving.
Jack! Jack! I can't see!
She put her hand over her face, trying to block out the influx of lights flashing in her face before she felt his hand take her own. Leading her through the throng of people screaming questions at them both. Once they were inside, she gasped, and leaned against the wall. She kept hold of his hand and just tried to concentrate. She still couldn't see. All she could see were black spots everywhere from the flashes.
I didn't expect it to be so bad with the cameras. I should have closed my eyes.
He took her hand again and led her carefully until she could feel him wanting her to sit down. She reached down and found a bench there underneath her and slowly sat down clinging to his hand. She almost felt.. like.. yeah.. like that day. Her chest started heaving, and tears streamed down her cheeks. A slight panic attack right then and there. Her fingers clenched his hand tightly.
Just talk to me for a minute okay.. because I can't see. And, I really need to hear you right now... because the last time I couldn't see was.. that day and... she felt him sit down next to her and she curled into him. Letting her nose burry itself in his clothes. That alone started calming her down and his voice did even more. |

| The kiss lasted longer than Jack expected, Amelia holding him close for that extra moment. That minute amount of time made all the difference before she pulled back and told him that she loved him back, urging them to go and get on with it. Once they exited the vehicle and took all of four steps, they were assaulted by the hordes of media and press. Flashes from cameras plastered them and questions were being yelled from all directions. Despite the noise and the lights, only one thing actually reached Jack's ears.
Jack! Jack! I can't see!
Captain Conners! What's your strategy for the hearing today?
Jack's hand shot out and grabbed Amelia's, softly pulling her to him. Slowly pushing through the herd of journalistic humanity, Jack ignored the questions.
What does your daughter think of Detective Remington? Detective, what was your initial thought when the Captain propositioned you?
Taking the handicap ramp to the door, Jack quickly ushered Amelia inside before turning and glaring at the sharks below him.
No...Comment.
Walking her softly to a wooden bench on the outside, Jack sat her down, and softly let her snuggle in before the hearing.
Just talk to me for a minute okay.. because I can't see. And, I really need to hear you right now... because the last time I couldn't see was.. that day and...
Its ok Ames...I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere. Not now, not ever. Next time, we are getting you tinted contact lenses or something, because our hearing photos are free professional photography, and we really can't pass that up.
Hearing her sniffle and laugh at the same time brought a smile to his face. Looking around at the slowly gathering crowd, he softly waved to Kalinda, who was standing close to the taller firefighter she was supposedly dating. Dozens of off-duty MHD officers were in attendance too, including Amelia's partner.
Plus, everyone is here for us. You remember the fight Amanda put up about going to school today?
As Amelia responded, the giant wooden double doors opened, the chief of the department stood there.
You two ready?
Jack rose, meeting the eyes of his boss.
Yes, sir. |

| He was a dork.
Crappy sweaters, lame jokes, talked about his exwife at all the wrong times... but that was what she loved about him. Because he was a normal guy. Good looking, but he would never be in the department nude calender, not that she didn't find him insanely attractive but he wasn't the type that was like that. He was a father, a good man, and the kind of man she had always wanted to meet. Even now, he was getting her to laugh amid the tears that were burning behind her eye lids. She didn't even know Wesley was here because she couldn't see and she was inhaling Jack's scent too much to really care at the moment who else was around.
Amelia pulled back and blinked her eyes slowly. Luckily, retinal burns didn't last forever and slowly her vision began to creep back in. First still splotchy and then slowly fading until it was just a slight color defect which she could work with until it cleared away all together.
"Yeah next time.. sunglasses or something, definitely. I didn't expect so many people and I..."
She caught sight of Wes and gave him a warm and thankful smile. She had told him all about the whole thing. About today, and how she was terrified of the outcome. To see him there... it just made her feel better. It was like having her family here, because Wes was practically a brother in her mind. She'd never thought of him as anything other than that and she knew that he was the same with her. They would do anything for each other, but they would never be in love with each other.
She wanted to go give Wesley a hug but before she could make her way to him and to Kalinda standing next to him the large wooden double doors opened and the Chief of Police stepped out asking if they were ready.
Both nodded and stepped in.
Thankfully, there was no flash photography allowed as the two took their seats behind a large wooden desk. Today was just the hearing part. They would tell what happened, answer questions, and give their opinions on what happened. Another day would be testimonies from other people. And then.. the last day would be the actual verdict. Amelia sighed as she took her seat and placed her hands gently in her lap as the Police Board representatives took their seats. There were five to make sure there was never a tie, and they all stared her down.
Did people really think she was with Jack to get a promotion? She had never put in for one.. in fact, she'd probably turn down one if she was even offered just because.. she really loved being a Forensic Detective.
We are here today, to begin the hearing process regarding Captain Jack Conners of the Meta-Human Division of the Bastion Police Department, and Detecive Amelia Remington, of the Heta-Human Division of the Bastion Police Department. Brought before us on charges of misconduct, of fraternizing outside the office, and compromsing the intergrity of our cause.
Wow... I don't think he could have possibly said that more negatively. she whispered more to herself than to Jack though she was sure he had heard it.
Amelia took a sip of the water that she had been provided. Her hands shaking slightly out of nerves.
We all behind you, Rems. Ben patted her on the shoulder as he sat behind her in the spectator seats. She gave a smile and returned her attention to the men and women on the higher platform.
The Council would like to hear from and question Captain Jack Conners to start. Captain Conners will you please rise and take your place on the stand. the man motioned to a seated chair close to the council with a mic for recording his answers attatched. Amelia squeezed his hand and smiled as he went to the slaughter first.
Captain Conners, please inform us of how you came to be .. involved with Dective Remington. |

| Stepping in to the large audience chamber was a bit disconcerting. There was a large table for them to sit at, directly in front of the raised bench where the five 'judges' sat above them. There was the Chief of Police, Two Deputy Chiefs, the Attorney General for the city of Bastion and a random officer picked at lottery. This particular officer Jack had known in passing as a no-nonsense lieutenant out of vice. It was quite the spectacle, and it was all out for them and their so-called 'misdeeds.'
The hearing panel called Jack first, and before swearing, he squeezed Amelia's hand and swore, under oath, to tell the truth.
Captain Conners, please inform us of how you came to be .. involved with Detective Remington.
Jack could only smile at the memory, how funny and very much like his entire life since Celeste left. In other circumstances, such as this one, it could be embarrassing, even unbelievable. Then again...he had sworn to tell the truth.
Well, I came to be involved with Amelia through an orchestration of events by my daughter, Amanda. You could say she...hooked us up.
The MHD crowd laughed, for they all knew the rambunctious mascot that his daughter was to them. They also knew the kind of mind tricks and games she played with people...and just the kind of power she really had. A gavel banged on wood, silencing the outside laughter.
You mean to tell this court, under oath, that your seven-year old daughter made the relationship possible.
Yes, sir. If you knew my daughter, you would believe me as well. Amanda kept insisting that she get babysat and spending time with Amelia. She had hoped that something would happen, which is what ended up happening. Trust me, when you talk to her tomorrow...she will tell you everything.
Moving on, Captain. How did your relationship with Detective Remington affect your role as commanding officer?
I spent significantly less on gas to the office, I almost always had a bag lunch, and no other reason. I kept Amelia and I separate from Detective Remington and I. We both understood that work was a completely different ballgame and we avoided any sort of command decision unless absolutely necessary. If anything, I was more strict with her requests...it made her work more precise.
For the moment, the council seemed to be satisfied until they spoke to Amelia. They excused Jack and he rose, taking a seat. One of the Deputy Chiefs looked over to the young woman.
Detective Amelia Remington, please rise and take your place. |

| Amelia sat there, with her soft teal eyes on Jack as he sat behind the microphone to give his testimony. She smiled when he admitted that his daughter had orchestrated the whole thing. Which was true. The MHD all laughed because they all knew his daughter very well. She had every single one of them, even the gentle giant Benjamin wrapped around her tiny little finger. Amelia had been and still was no different though now she had stepped into some sort of psuedo-mommy role to the girl she had to make sure that the girl didn't get away with everything.
Remy couldn't help but smile when he talked about the differences at work after they got together. Silly as it might seem, one of her favorite things about her life with Jack was making him lunches in the morning. Making sure he always had something good to eat and she always put a cookie at the very bottom and sometimes they had a annonymous note in the bottom. Usually something cheesy like 'have a good day' 'miss you' 'cant wait to see you at home' things like that to make him smile during a rough day.
And he was right, he had been a lot harder on her requests, documentations, and reports since they had gotten together but she had known why and never resented him for it. It was all just what had to happen for them to be together.
They let Jack go and she was called to the stand. She got up and headed to the chair that Jack had just sat in and sat down. She placed her hands in her lap as the men made her wait for a few moments while they took notes. She knew it was all on purpose. As a Detective she knew full well what they were doing. So she waited patiently until one of them finally looked up apparently having decided she had paid her dues.
Detective Remington, can you explain how you and the Captain, your Captain ended up together.
Amelia's blonde brow rose. So that was how it was going to be. It was her fault. Amelia smiled.
Certainly. What Jack said was true. His daughter had complained that she was tired of sitting around the office that day and Jack still had a lot of paperwork to do before he would be able to take his daughter home. I had all ready gotten off for the day and offered to take her with me. Little did I know it was all completely orchestrated by his daughter to get us both in the same building after work. So yes, his daughter, was the driving force... or rather the buldozing force.
The MHD laughed again, everyone was all too familiar with Amanda not to understand how true that was.
I see. Did you start sleeping with Captain Conners to better obtain the promotion you were up for.
The surprise in Amelia's face said everything. I'm sorry you must be mistaken. I do not wish for a promotion, nor have I put my name in for one. I am quite perfectly happy with my current position and am quite hoping that doesn't change any time soon. Furthermore. You cheapen my relationship with Jack by saying 'sleeping with'. It is not a fling, Lieutenant Nathan Green. It is a relationship.
Nathan looked a bit taken back as he began to write something down. Amelia's teal eyes shifted as another person came to ask her questions.
Do you think that your relationship with Captain Conners has changed anything in the work place?
Amelia thought for a moment. If anything, I think we avoid each other more in the work place now than before. Because, we don't want to cause issues there. We're there to do our job. When I am at work, I'm not the Captain's girlfriend, I'm his lead Detective and Forensic Specialist. When I'm at home.. I'm not Detective Remington, I'm just Amelia. It's completely seperate.
The date in question, you were held hostage in a bank robbery. I am curious, do you think extreneous measures were taken that day?
Amelia's eyes shifted to Jack and then back to the man on the podium waiting for the answer.
No. The crowd seemed to oooooo. Because for a moment they hadn't been sure what she would say. A fellow officer, was held hostage, by a group intent on hurting and killing her. So no, I do not. I can't imagine that any one of you wouldn't have done the same thing. In fact, if I may...
She rose for a moment. Stepping over to the table where Jack stood and reached over to grab her file.
Detective Remington! You will resume your seat!
She smiled as she turned with file in hand. Oh don't worry Lieutentant that's exactly where I'm going.
The MHD chuckled as she walked back to the chair and sat down again with the file in hand. She opened the massive thing that was practically spilling over with papers. Her eyes caught Wes' and he nodded. She had talked to Wes a lot lately He backed her 100% and even told her if she DID get canned she could always get a job as an arson investigator, she'd probably have cases solved in a day.
I have about thirty different cases, from our city and the other major cities around us of various similar circumstances in which things like ours were done. Including the killing of the perpetrators. I printed them all up so you would be able to read them over, in case you weren't fully aware of this.
The men and women on the stand just stared at her for a moment. Balif, bring the file.
A younger officer took the file and handed it over to the Attorney General. Who shifted through some of it's contents.
Other circumstances didn't have two members of the same department in a relationship! cried the Lieutenant.
Amelia smiled. He had fallen right into her trap. Why.. Lieutenant, that's quite true! Which means the fact that Jack Conners and I are in a relationship had zero bearing on the days events.
The Lieutenant went quiet and looked over at his 'peers'.
We will take a short recess. So that we may look over the file provided by Detective Remington. Resume in ... one hour. he stated as they stood and the whole court did too. Amelia slumped in her seat now that the interrogation, because that was exactly what it had been, was over temporarily. |

| Jack sat quietly at the table while the panel questioned Amelia. From the start, it was obvious their initial thoughts: it was Amelia's fault, and she was gunning for advancement. The questioning from the Vice lieutenant was very much to that letter, and every word made Jack slowly begin to grind his teeth. It was at that moment that Jack noticed the entire panel was male. The large chance of getting a female officer on the panel, including three Deputy Chiefs, made the lack of a female presence all the more telling.
If these bastards are trying to railroad us in to some sort of guilty bullshit...I will never let the press stop after this.
Fact of the matter was that Amelia was holding her own quite well. She was quirky and countering them without seeming aggressive or angry. The complete opposite of Jack...she really was amazing up there, it made so much more sense why juries in court loved her so much. He simply smiled as she looked over to him from time to time. Jack had told her not to do that too much, lest she be accused of taking cues from him, but every glance was reassuring.
The date in question, you were held hostage in a bank robbery. I am curious, do you think extraneous measures were taken that day?
Their eyes hit one another as the question they had been worried about came up. At least, Jack was concerned about that question. In his own assessment, Jack had been too liberal with the use of lethal force and extreme tactics. Amelia never had seemed convinced, refusing to argue the point with him and calling his reasoning 'silly and too humble.' She came up and grabbed the file folder, winking at him before strolling back to her seat. Conners had to wonder what was in the folder, and what she was up to...
When Amelia explained what was in the folder, Jack began to see where she was going with this, and he wondered how she would drive it home. She always had some sort of sneaky hook. When the Lieutenant spoke about how the similar situations hadn't had two officers in love, it took everything Jack had not to laugh out loud.
Why.. Lieutenant, that's quite true! Which means the fact that Jack Conners and I are in a relationship had zero bearing on the days events.
I love that woman.
Once they had called for a recess, Jack was up in a flash, offering his hand to Amelia from the chair. When she stood, he held her in a loving hug, softly speaking so only she could hear...it was one of great things about her...besides, well, everything.
You are the most amazing, wonderful Detective I've ever had...and the only woman for me. I love you so much, even though I don't know why you didn't tell me about the folder earlier.
The majority of the people in the audience sat at the recess and simply mingled, nodding and nudging the two of them, their congratulations at hand. While it seemed like a small victory at the time, no one knew what the panel was going to find in those reports...or what the other two days of the hearing would bring. Thus, even as the world around him celebrated, Jack waited for the judges as a convict waits for the headsman...just to be safe. |

| Amelia smelled Jack's presence before she saw him out of the corner of her eye. Leaning down and offering her a hand. She took it and got up. Only to be pulled into a warm hug. One that she returned, sighing heavily and letting a lot of the stress that she had not let show on the stand release from her body. She closed her eyes for a moment listening to the quiet tenor of his voice in a tone that only she could hear so quietly he was speaking.
She smiled gently.
I love you too, and I didn't tell you because I have been compiling it all week but I wasn't sure it would be enough. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to use it. Wesley's lawyer said I had to have the right set up. Luckily, they gave that to me. she whispered as low as she could while making sure that he could still hear her.
She pulled back and looked into his face. He was tired, she could see the darkness underneath his eyes and the way that the little indentions in his face from years of being a Captain and police officer had deepened slightly. Her fingers softly ran underneath his right eye, as if she could wipe away the darkness and bring back a rested Jack. She knew that she was probably worse, but girls had make up to cover up such things. Truth was, most of the stuff in that file she had found on the nights that she couldn't sleep. Researching until she passed out where ever in the house she was so that she didn't disturb Jack too much.
She knew he found her int he morning or.. she would wake up just before he got to her and she would close her laptop and claim she was doing some old case work while she had nothing better to do. She didn't want him to tell her that her task was foolish or that it would never work. And she hadn't want to get his hopes up either.
Lets go get some air on the roof. she whispered.
**One hour later**
Everyone sat, nervously in the court room again. Amelia's hand was squeezing on Jack's probably a bit too hard but she needed him because she was terrified of what they might decide on. Some of the cases had been ruled effective, some of them had called for some disciplinary measures but none of them had called for dismissal and if she could at least get them both to keep their jobs she would deem that a victory. They couldn't tell them they could or couldn't date. If it came down to that she would let Jack keep his job and she would leave.
The men came back into the room, and Amelia's back straightened as they looked down at the both of them and took their seat. It was the Attorney General that spoke up for them.
We have reviewed the file that Detective Remington has given to us. A startling account of the many times in our prestigious history that something similar to these events has happened. The consenquences there of. In a way, she has made certain members of this council look incompetent in their attempts to gather such information as well. Far exceeding what we expected, and proving what an asset she is to the Meta-Human Division. Amelia smiled warily. We are not here to award merit. We are here to find out if there was any bearing of their relationship on the day in question. We are here to find out if extreneous measures were taken because of who was held hostage, not just a police officer but a significant other.
The man looked down at the file, and closed it.
It has been decided, today's questioning has been finalized. We will return tomorrow for the questioning of those involved. The Internal Affairs, Amanda Conners, Benjamin Parks, and a few others from the department. Court Ajourned.
Amelia just sat there in shock. Did they seriously... say they were done?! |

| Amelia explained about the time frame with the folder of cases and such, and Jack was impressed, albeit disappointed she didn't include him. He understood why, but sometimes he was jealous for no good reason. The comments about Wes' lawyer raised an eyebrow in thought. Why did a firefighter need a lawyer? Especially one who could consult on this sort of case...it was strange. At Amelia's urging, they retreated to the roof of the building near the helipad, enjoying each others' company and the warm day. They made sure to be back for the return of the panel.
Once the panel returned, they made their judgement of the material that had been presented to them by Amelia. He enjoyed the compliments, but their next words simply boiled his blood.
We are not here to award merit. We are here to find out if there was any bearing of their relationship on the day in question. We are here to find out if extraneous measures were taken because of who was held hostage, not just a police officer but a significant other.
They never said anything about use of force. This is a farce. Jack softly growled to himself as they continued to discuss the purpose of the hearing before adjourning for the day. Turning to face Amelia, they shared the same look of shock on their faces.
How are they going to evaluate anything when they barely asked us any questions!?! Turning to their Union Representative, Jack began to lay out a strategy. Bob, we need to exploit the purpose of the hearing if they are going to base it on the bank robbery. The fraternization charge is bogus then, and then we can move forward from there to get everything thrown out.
Rising with a purpose, he softly took Amelia's hand and led her out. There was business to attend to in the night, and in the morning. |

| It tickles!
Amelia looked over at her psuedo-daughter and smiled. She couldn't help but have wanted to get out of the house. Jack was at home in his office doing .. whatever he was doing. mainly, he had a bug in his butt about how he was going to fix their careers and get the Internal Affairs people and the board off their backs. Amanda had been wound pretty tight because, well... her father was and she knew that Amelia was worried as well. So, Amelia had kidnapped Amanda for the day leaving a very vague note on the counter of the kitchen.
Just relax and try not to think about it. What color did you pick?
Purple!
Excellent choice, I got myself this pretty sparkly teal color.
Amanda was so excited. Her very first pedicure. She had never had one before, and all her friends at school got them all the time. Amelia hadn't had one in a while and so she had decided to take Amanda out for a girls day so that they could get away from the intense atmosphere of the house and let Jack work without Amanda lurking in doorways or saying that she was bored.
Do you think you and daddy will be okay?
No matter what happens, we will be okay. Worse case, we lose our jobs and we find new ones. There are plenty of places to work for people like your dad and me. Don't you worry.
Amanda smiled. Thing was, Amelia didn't want to hide anything from the little girl. She wanted her to understand full well what was happening because she didn't want Amanda to be surprised later on when not everything came up roses. It might work out fine. Jack had an idea, and Amelia had done a lot of work when it came to making sure that day didn't seem any worse than any other day on any other force in the area. So between the two of them, she felt like they would probably win. But, one never knew when you were dealing with the Board and so she didn't want to count all her ducks just yet.
As the women painted the girls' toes they relaxed. Their eyes closing as they listened to music. It was nice and relaxing. The women were burning lavender in the scenters and the water rushing around them made everything so comfortable and relaxing which is exactly what the girls needed.
**Thirty minutes later**
Where now?
Amanda smiled up from her purple toes. She was so happy wearing her little flip flops as they exited the nail salon and Amelia looked around trying to figure out where to go next.
There's a girls' store right over there. Lets go check it out, the sign says they're having a sale. she said linking her arm with Amanda's as they crossed the street and headed into the store. |

| Once they had gotten home from the Police Headquarters, it was barely afternoon so Jack made a couple of sandwiches for them and they ate a quiet lunch. Jack's mind was far too focused on the words from the end of the day:
We are here to find out if there was any bearing of their relationship on the day in question. We are here to find out if extraneous measures were taken because of who was held hostage...
The words rang in his head and unfortunately, because of it, he hadn't been very good company. Once lunch was finished and Amelia moved to clean up, Jack sequestered himself in his home office. From there, he coordinated efforts with his Union Representative about the technical issues they could bring up. The thick hardbound copy he had of the Department's Rules and Regulations sat open on his over sized desk next to a pad filled with scribbles.
Based on his research, Jack figured he could get the panel dismissed on a technicality since the original document stated the hearing was due to his relationship with a subordinate. Meanwhile, the panel clarified a different purpose, and charged them with inappropriate charges, making Amelia's inclusion in the hearing completely unnecessary. Thus, Jack could theoretically have it overturned and force the tribunal to refile and retry them. Luckily, double jeopardy would apply, and they couldn't be brought up on the same charges.
That meant the only thing they could charge Jack with was a charge Amelia had quashed that day.
When Amelia and Amanda would return from their girl's excursion, Jack would be sleeping softly on his book of Departmental Regulations, snoring softly. The day had been long and hard...it took a lot out of him. |

| Do you think Daddy will like the new tie?
Well you picked it out, so I'm pretty sure, it's a good bet.
You think it'll be lucky, for .. tomorrow?
Amelia smiled. Of course! Didn't you know that anything you give a parent out of love becomes lucky? Because, that parent is lucky to get it. Like.. the coffee cup you made me for Valentines. It's my lucky mug. I took it with me today at court and I'll take it tomorrow too.
Really?! Amanda beamed happily. Amelia nodded and she watched as the little girl held the white tie box in her hands like it was the best thing in the world. And, in a way it was. Jack could probably use a little pick-me up.
They pulled into the drive way and Amelia pulled the bag of clothes they had bought for Amanda out of the back seat and they all headed in. Greated instantly with a happy Puddles that was all too eager for some company. Amanda was always running around in the backyard with him and he knew that if he begged her, he would get one of his favorite treats from the jar on the counter.
Amanda rushed into her father's office and then stopped. Seeing him asleep she snuck in and put the box on the desk and then quickly went out. motioning sleep with her hands, she instead took Puddles outside leaving Amelia in the house alone with Jack. She took her shoes off and headed into the office leaning against the door frame for a moment watching Jack sleep.
Crossing over the office, she brushed her hand down his cheek and over his shoulder watching him wake up slowly. Leaning down she kissed his lips softly, letting him come fully awake.
We're home. she whispered as the kiss broke and she slid into his lap as soon as he sat up. Feeling his arms come around her, she snuggled in not flinching. It was easier if they were both sitting down, it only happened if they were both standing. But, her appointment was set for the day after the hearing was over and she hoped to be better soon.
Amanda picked this out for you to wear tomorrow. And, we bought her a nice outfit, so that she will be confident tomorrow on the stand. She was really nervous so we went and did some girly stuff. I think she had fun. She's outback with Puddles. she told him gently. |

| The soft kiss on his lips woke him up, and his eyes opened sleepily. Instinctively, Jack kissed Amelia back before raising his head from the book.
I..huh? Oh...hi.
Jack smiled at the mystery kisser, her identity confirmed now that she had spoken to him and suddenly sat in his lap. He wrapped his arms around her waist and let her snuggle in to him. It was nice to actually feel like they were going to be ok. It had been a good couple of weeks since Jack had felt that way with Amelia. The panic that came from thinking that the bank robbery was the end of them as well as the end of his job had almost been too much to bear. Kalinda had been a lifesaver in that regard...he figured that was the reason he kept trying to push Kali on Amelia.
Amanda picked this out for you to wear tomorrow. And, we bought her a nice outfit, so that she will be confident tomorrow on the stand. She was really nervous so we went and did some girly stuff. I think she had fun. She's outback with Puddles.
Smiling at how Amelia just seemed to take care of things, he couldn't imagine life without her anymore. In the beginning of their relationship it was possible to imagine life going on as it had...Amelia just made everything better.
**The Next Day**
Walking in to Bastion Police Headquarters had been far less traumatizing the second day. Their union representative had made deals with the press, and they were far less intrusive and didn't use flashbulbs. Amanda ate up the attention in her new flowered skirt, button down white shirt and purple cardigan. Jack looked dashing in his blue tie with silver diagonal lines. It matched him perfectly, as did Amanda's outfit her.
Jack was ready for today, a leather bound notepad with his arguments and precedent inside in one hand, Amanda's hand in the other. Jack and Amelia had spent some time coaching Amanda on the questions they would probably ask, and told her to be honest. At this point, Jack was confident they would be alright, but he wasn't going to coach his daughter to lie. Conners just didn't do that. Jack tried to interject his evidence first, but the panel was not hearing it today.
Captain Conners, all additional evidence will be presented after witness statements and testimony. First witness called is Amanda Conners, please come forward.
Amanda was sworn in, and the MHD crowd was already in her favor. They loved their little girl and everyone in the MHD family saw her as one of their own. Seeing Amanda being put to the question also seemed to bristle more backs than that of Amelia and Jack!
Ms. Conners, can you describe the relationship your father and Detective Remington share?
Uh huh. They love each other, can't you see? Duh.
The chuckling started early in the audience and the panel was obviously not pleased with being made fun of, especially by a seven year old. Jack wanted to smile, but he fought it down. Amanda was her own person, that was for sure, but he couldn't have her ruining their chances to get good information to the panel before, hopefully, Jack trashed the case.
Miss, how many times have you seen Detective Remington and your father together while they were working?
Ummm...I think three times. Daddy and Amelia don't hang out at work. Except when Amelia was doing a warrant or something. She usually has Bennie do it for her, though. The little girl waved and smiled at Amelia's partner, who returned the gesture with a giant smile to match his large face.
Do you remember the days after the bank robbery? What were your father and Detective Remington like?
Well, it was tough. Daddy was really worried the first couple of days. He told me that the next couple of weeks were going to be difficult.
A murmur rose in the crowd as the reasons for Jack's worry held everyone's attention. Was it because Jack knew he was caught? That he had used excessive force, or failed as a leader?
Why was your father so worried, sweetheart?
Dad was worried about Amelia. He said that the bank robber was a slimy asshole who forced himself on her. Amelia was having nightmares and couldn't sleep. Daddy just wanted to help her, but he didn't know how.
Oh, and my name is Amanda, or Ms. Conners. Thankyouverymuch.
Jack smiled at that one, the way his daughter took Lieutenant Green down a peg with the last question. After that, the panel called up Amelia's partner, Benjamin Parks.

| Amelia was proud of Amanda as she sat on the stand. They had of course done their best to prepare the girl for what might or might not happen. They didn't want her to be too surprised but also to answer as honestly as she could. Because they were all police detectives and officers and surely, they would be able to tell if she lied. Amelia's hands were gently resting in her lap watching the girl she had come to love so dearly stand up for her and her father.
Amanda was something else. In the beginning of the relationship it was fun to have a sometimes daughter. One she could spoil, take shopping, and have fun with but return home when she was finished. But that didn't last very long. Soon she moved in and had become the mother that amanda hadn't had in a very long time. She felt like they really had a good family now, and she really hoped they were able to keep it.
When Amanda got to the hard questions, Amelia looked down at her hands as the girl detailed why the next while was so hard. With Amelia's nightmares, her not sleeping, and her other issues laid before the court. No one had thought to ask yesterday how the Detective was doing after being held hostage by a creepy asshole for hours while she waited for someone to help her get out. No one thought to ask if she was handling it all right or if there were any lasting effects. They were all too concerned with the relationship and the events of the day.
You could see that realization on the faces of several members of the board.
Up next was Benjamin, her partner. He squeezed her shoulder as he walked past her and high fived Amanda who came to sit next to Amelia and Jack. Amelia put her arm around the girl and hugged her to her side. Whispering how good of a job she had done in her statements.
Benjamin Parks. You are the partner of Amelia Remington, is that correct?
Yeah.
Mister Parks was it obvious in the office that Amelia and Jack were in a relationship?
No.
The board just stared at him. Do you care to elaborate?
I didn't know.
Some of the MHD laughed, they couldn't help it. Ben was a man of little words and a lot of action. He wasn't very articulate or smart, but he was insanely strong and he had a bit of a vibe about things.
So there were no signs? When did you find out?
Ben shrugged. In the ambulance. After the robbery.
That shocked the board. But you could see the MHD completely agreed. The fact that the Captain and his Detective had been in a relationship had shocked them all when it had come to light.
How so?
She wanted Jack. She couldn't see, and she couldn' thear too well cuz of her abilities an' such. She jus' kept askin' for Jack. I thought at first it was cuz she wanted the Cap so he could take a statement or somethin'... but soon as I saw his face.. it was kinda obvious...
But certainly, their relationship had to have... made a difference somewhere? Given her more leeway in matters... promotions.. extra days off.. something like that? The lieutenant tried.
You'd think so.. cuz I'd do that if I had a girlfriend like Rems. Buuut nah. She works real hard. Lots of hours, even when she's not on the clock annnn' she's always workin' with me. She's the only one that don' think I'm stupid.
Rem smiled over at him. He wasnt' stupid. He wasn't articulate at all, but he was actually smart and his vibes were almost always right.
Thank you Benjamin. Let us call... Victoria Jackson to the stand please." |

| Jack cringed as they called the Internal Affairs Special Detective who had interviewed him after the bank robbery. Victoria Jackson was nice enough, except for the fact that if you knew where her buttons were, she lost her cool rather quickly. Jackson's only real problem was that her buttons were huge, and rather easily pushed. Once sworn in, Jackson looked the part of an impartial, focused officer of the law.
Special Detective Jackson, can you describe the interview you had with Captain Conners and the content you went over?
It was short and the information I received from Captain Conners' interview was not fruitful. Unfortunately, Captain Conners was quite rude and left the interview prematurely.
Do you feel Captain Conners was forthcoming about the events surrounding January second?
Jackson turned and looked at Jack, who met her cool eyes as she responded. No, it is my professional opinion that he was withholding information. She had been practicing...
Jack did his best to control his temper as the woman on the stand told the truth, albeit a limited one. Technically speaking, Jack hadn't answered a lot of her questions pertaining to the bank robbery or his relationship with Amelia. Then again, she never did mention how she had asserted the idea that Amelia was simply looking for perks besides warming the Captain's sheets at night. After a few more simple questions, the panel moved to excuse Special Detective Jackson. As they did so, Jack and Amelia's Union Representative shot out of his chair.
Objection! Redirect, if it pleases the panel.
Go ahead, Mr. Renly.
Ms. Jackson did you, as protocol dictates, record your conversation with Captain Conners?
Victoria's face dropped just a bit before she regained her calm. Jack and her both knew she looked like a fool on that tape, like some sort of raving lunatic. That, and the condescension in her voice would discredit her pretty quickly.
Of course, however there isn't much to it. I ask question and the Captain refuses t...
I move that the tape be played, to verify this witness' statement.
The panel quickly agreed and they listened to the tape. Victoria soon lost all her bluster on the stand as she listened to herself lose her cool and completely lose control of the interview. They also heard Jack verbally maneuver around her and poke and prod her buttons before she finally lost it. Once it was over, Ms. Jackson was relieved from the stand, and the Attorney General spoke once more, calling another witness.
Since we heard from Special Detective Jackson, this panel calls Special Detective Zachary Cartwright. |
| | | Guest Guest
| Subject: Re: Facing the Music (Amelia) Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:33 pm | |
| Zachary Cartwright didn't look any different from the day that he questioned her in the department headquarters. The same day Jack had been questioned. She thought he looked a little wary after what had happened to Victoria Jackson on the stand. Which probably meant that Zach would be a bit more forthcoming about what had happened during their interview.
She watched as he made eye contact with her, and this time the Union Representative stood up in the beginning.
I think we shall play the tape before we question Special Detective Cartwright.
The tape played, and it was obvious in the beginning that they were civil and playing nice. But it was inherently obvious when the man came back from getting coffee his whole demeanor had changed. That he began to acuse her of being a slut, and how Conners was in the other room spilling all her dirty secrets. Amelia sighed, that was NOT going to make Jack happy to hear. So she reached over and took his hand, so that he would at least remain slightly calm.
Or.. just not deck the man.
Detective Cartwright, obviously we know that Captain Conners was not saying such things about Amelia Remington in the other room. Yet you claimed that, why? asked the Attorney General.
Oh well.. no... I was just trying to see if she would .. talk about their relationship. I was trying to find out if there was any reason she was dating him.
Objection! That is NOT his job. Finding out why is not his job. He was there to find out if the relationship effected her work! It did not! As we have so obviously shown. Renly claimed having jumped from his seat.
We will take that under advisement.
Cartwright, did you find any reason to believe that Remington and Conners have suffered in the work place because of their relationship?
Actually, no sir. To be honest, our investigation was thorough. We watched tapes of the office, talked to a lot of people that didn't know they were in a relationship and who were floored to find out. We watched them as well. In the office. Certain that at some point their true colors would show. But, to be honest sirs.. we never saw anything that compromised their work ethics.
The entire court room was quiet for a long moment. Obviously, they didn't expect him to say that.
Your dismissed, Cartwright, thank you. Is there any one else that wishes to speak on behalf of either side of the debate today? If not, Captain Conners, it is your floor. |

| Jack watched with curiosity as the Special Detective that had interviewed Amelia took the stand. His Union Rep was on the ball with this one, and the tape was played first this time. The interview with Amelia went relatively smoothly under Mr. Cartwright returned with coffee. It was a common tactic, very good-cop/bad-cop. Then again, alluding that Amelia was loose with her morals and her skirt was grating on Jack's ears. He was sick of the people accusing Amelia of being at fault. This is literally the second time a significant other of Jack's had gotten in to some sort of trouble with the law, yet he was never suspected.
Honestly, what did a guy have to do to get suspected of breaking the rules?
Cartwright's testimony, however, was not what Jack was expecting. He spoke as if he had made a mistake, and he spoke honestly. That much was for certain. The thing that really stood out for Jack was when Special Detective Cartwright told the court, under oath, that Amelia and Jack had never shown any sort of misconduct while on duty. Cartwright spoke about watching the both of them for an extended period of time, and how nothing had turned up during the interviews, the surveillance, and the monitoring. Holding Amelia's hand, he squeezed it and smiled. They may just win this after all....without all the technicalities.
That man has a place in my Division if he ever wants it. Conners said softly to himself, knowing Amelia could hear.
You're dismissed, Cartwright, thank you. Is there any one else that wishes to speak on behalf of either side of the debate today? If not, Captain Conners, it is your floor.
Jack rose and looked at each of the five members of the hearing panel. The room was quiet, the people in the audience awaiting some sort of crazy revelation from Jack.
I...respectfully withdraw my request to speak and present evidence at this time. Thank you.
A collective gasp filled the room as Jack sat down when the gavel struck the bench, causing Amanda to jump.
We will adjourn for the day today, and present judgement tomorrow. Thank you again for your cooperation today. |

| Amelia hadn't slept a wink. Neither had Jack. Amanda was in and out of their room all night. They ended up finally just having her stay and watching Harry Potter movies until she passed out between them. Amelia had her head on Jack's shoulder all night, and his hand was constantly in her hair. They were both afraid and yet somewhat optimistic about what today would bring.
Now, the courtroom was bustling with activity. Jack, Amelia, and Amanda all sat in the front behind their little table. Glasses of water for each of them. Their Union Representative sipping his nervously. The whole of MHD was there to support there. Everyone was talking in that nervous chatter, as the three of them sat there waiting for the men to come into the room.
Finally, the door in the back of the room opened and everyone fell deathly silent as the members of the Board took their seats.
Captain Jack Conners and Detective Amelia Remington, please rise so that we may pronounce verdict.
Never had Amelia felt so close to the many criminals she had put behind bars. She stood up and was proud when Amanda stood up too. She was a very smart very mature little girl. All three of them linked hands as they waited.
It is wrong. began to the Lieutenant. The fourth rule in our handbooks, given to us as soon as we sign up for the Force explains that Inner-Office Fraternization is forbidden. That should one be caught breaking that very rule, they could be disband from the Force. Black listed. At the very least, promoted back to paper pusher.
Amelia bit her lower lip and her eyes shifted over to Jack. She honestly didn't want him to lose his position or his job. She knew what the MHD meant to him and she did not want to be the reason for him losing it. It would be a black cloud that would hang over them forever.
There are many reasons that we do not condone such actions in the work place. began the Attorney General stepping in before the Lieutenant could do any more. First and foremost is the fact that no matter how hard one tries there is always favoritism. Always lack of judgement. Always a lack of something that will put others' lives in danger. People that constantly believe they cause no harm because they are in love and they mean no harm means nothing. Relationships can get ugly, there are break ups, and fights, cheating and lust. There are too many places for one to fall through the cracks and make a bad choice.
He looked down at the folders in front of him and gave out a long sigh.
We deliberated on this for many hours. But, eventually, we came to a unanamous decision. We the Board of the Force, find Detective Remington and Captain Conners... innocent... of any wrong doing. The court room erupted in cheers, whoops, laughs, and everyone celebrating as loudly as they could. Amelia herself couldn't help but look over at Jack with a sparkle in her eyes.
Wait! Wait! he smashed the gavel down on the table in front of him until the room fell into an excited silence. Bursting at the seems. Because, there is a relationship between Remington and Jack we have decided that they will remain under probation for an extended period of time. In which, Internal Affairs will continue to investigate and observe. For a period not to extend past six months, the two officers in question will remain under Probation. No possibilities of advancement until the probationary period has been passed. Should anything be discovered that comes to the harm of the Force or it's men and women. A trial shall be opened. That is all. |
